Muhammad & Jesus: How much do they differ?

Think about the key areas of difference between Muhammad and Jesus. Did they mostly think alike or were they radically different?

  1. After reading some of these web pages Mr. Bauer gave us I am in awe that anyone would compare Jesus to eww Mohammed. He is fowl! He raped a nine year old girl, married his Daughter-in-law, and beheaded 13 year old boys. Jesus would never do anything near that. That is almost blasphemic to call yourself a prophet of God after taking part in all those shananagains! Jesus was a kind, caring, peaceful, rightious, friendly, giving, life loving kind of guy. Mohammed is just a poser in my opinion, and disgusting at that!!!! ewwww!

  2. I totally understand where Caitlin is coming from but just because he did that does not mean Muslims actually agree and /or follow. Jesus and Muhammad were both different and alike. They were different because although Muhammad did talk of peace and love he did not talk about it as much as Jesus did. I also think there are the same because if you look closer you can see the good of Islam. We also should not judge because in the Old Testament it says/allows girls to get married at 12 - now how sick is that( Jesus was Jewish). The both believed that they were following God will. And although I am Christian I can see the message the Koran/Islam is trying to say

  3. Before we started this unit I new barely anything about Muhammad but just assumed he was somewhere along the lines of Jesus. After reading about him and learning about what he did i cant even see how anyone could call him a prophet. He treated women as if they were his toys and killed hundreds of people. I dont see how anyone could follow a man who did such things. Jesus should not even be compared to Muhammad, they are complete opposites except for the fact that they were both conveying a message from what they believed what God.

  4. Muhammad and Jesus were radically different because of their religious beliefs and views. But I agree with Judicaelle that there can also be some similarities. Both Islam and Christianity are very devoted religions. Their loving connection with Allah/God is very obvious. What makes them different are their moral beliefs. According to Muhammad, Allah allowed his people to own female/male slaves, advocate beheading, marry their daughter-in-laws, prostitute women, etc. I was in shock, just as Caitlin was, when I found out that Muslims allowed these immoral actions as a part of their religious beliefs. I am not saying they all agree to these beliefs, but they still have the permission/freedom to practice them. Christians believe the Islam religion is immoral because of their controversial beliefs. Christians believe Jesus is the son God and Muslims believe Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. God does not allow any of these actions and finds them sinful. According to the writings of the apostle Paul written in Timothy (1:8-10), enslaving people is sinful, unholy, and irreligious. As a Christian, I believe Jesus and Muhammad are extremely different from each other. But it also depends on a person’s perspective on Christianity and Islam.

  5. I was in the same boat as matt. Before reading about Islam and Muhammad I never really thought about the religion or their leader, Muhammad. I just figured he was like Jesus since the Muslims looked up to him. But I couldn't be more wrong. The textbook doesn't make Muhammad seem so bad but as i read the websites i was in awe. Muhammad is nothing like Jesus. Muhammad was a man who was interested in war and violence. He allowed slavery and rape. The fact that he would want to see someone in pain is nothing like Jesus. For example, when he beheaded a 13 year old boy or when he recommended wife-beatings these are just two examples of how he was cruel and jesus is not like him.

  6. I believe that Jesus and Muhammad, were both radically different, between their personalities and the way they lived their life. Jesus preached more about love and equality of both men and women, unlike Muhammad who required women to be completely cover and sometimes even sexually abused them. Muhammad allowed for the Muslims to enslave and beating of women and also to allow slaves, unlike Jesus who thought against the common people, who were controlled by the high priest. Jesus didn't force people to believe in him and his religion, he actually accepted these challenged unlike Muhammad who force Muslims into the religion of Islam and killed people for disagreeing. It is clear that Jesus is well respected today, when Muhammad is feared by most people and even though they both preached about religion, Jesus did it in a peaceful way, which is still being used today.

  7. Jesus and Muhammad were radically different from each other. Jesus's message was that of love and acceptance. Muhammad tries to force others to follow Allah. He discriminates against others and killed anyone who was unworthy. This doesn't seem like a practice a loving god would be proud of.

  8. Like matt and victoria, I never really knew anything about Muhammad. I knew he was a prophet, but thats it really. But as we learned about it more, I realized that that Jesus and Muhammad are absolutely different. Jesus preached about peace, equality and love to his followers. Jesus was never really violent and respected women. Jesus never enslaved people. He focused on setting them free from the enslavement of sin. He also didn't force people into believing in God. He set the way and it was our choice or decision to follow.
Muhammad, on the other hand, was a little different than Jesus. Muhammad also preached about peace and love. But Muhammad had a violent side to him. If people didn't agree, he would have them killed. Muhammad did sexually abuse 12 year old girls. Many of you think it is wrong (and it is) but you have to look at it in their perspective. Back then, girls got married at 12 years old. So technically, pretty much every girl was "sexually abused."

  9. -Matt i totally disagree with you don't know the circumstances and moral practices of those times.Maybe their lifestyles were more harsh so to get a point across he hard to be harsher. Maybe he truly did speak with God and maybe he is a true prophet of Allah. Allah may have told Muhammad to be the military leader that the Jews had in mind for Jesus. Jesus is not like Muhammad because he believed in sharing God's message through love and peace and Muhammad was just more forceful when it came to getting his message of across to the people. Their main message was the same, which was their was only one being that had omnipotent power and that was God.

  10. I agree with matt on the fact that before this chapter i didn't know anything about muhammad. After reading a lot of the new material mr. bauer presented us with; i sort of wonder how someone can be a prophet of god and rape women. dont get me wrong, i have nothing against the religion of islam. i dont have enough knowledge to completely understand their faith and what they stand for. i also dont hold stereotypes against them. back to the main topic though haha, since i was little i always heard stories of Jesus' ability to show love to others even when they were abusing him. However, i have heard few stories showing a compassionate side to muhammad. i think both had a similar goal in showing that there is only one god but they both went about proving this in two completely different directions.

  11. Over the past week, I learned a lot of significant information about the Islam faith. I also learned who Muhammad, the Prophet, was to his Muslim followers. In my perspective Muhammad was peculiar man who advocated cruel intentions about women and violence. I see no similarities between him and Jesus Christ. The only comparison about them is they both believe and love only one God and they preached to their followers to worship him. Jesus was truly the Son of God. Unlike Muhammad who was only the one that delivered the presence of Qur'an from Allah. He probably thinks he was superior to other people and wanted to preach what he believes instead of Allah's intentions for peace. Muhammad and Jesus had little similarities between them.

  12. Clearly, without any doubt, Jesus and Muhammad were extremely different. The real question is what were their differences. Jesus promoted the idea of loving everyone and anyone as an individual. He also had a way of thinking unlike any human. His actions confused the average human and challenged them to think past human reasoning and realize the divine truth behind his messages. Muhammad, on the other hand, dealt with things in a manner that most imperfect humans would understand and follow in more assurance. He created a community in which outsiders and disbelievers are frowned upon, and only those who believe in Allah will prosper. The God that he spoke of is awfully different than the one that Jesus referred to, whose primary request was to love all humans.

  13. Muhammad and Jesus thought alike, and they also did not think alike.

First of all, both of them believed in God, and they both wanted to promote their message, but they each had a different understanding and a different approach of preaching their message.
I won't be writing from a biased point of view, although I know I will.

Jesus proclaimed his message with acts of kindness; he believed in love over hate, he believed in equality, the true signs of God. I believe that Jesus performed miracles, not as an act, but to show the true powers of God. In my mind, Jesus was a Prophet. He loved everyone, showing his respect to both men and women, he never discriminated anyone for being a non-believer. Violence was never the answer in Jesus' eyes. He was a kind and gentle man, who wanted to proclaim his religion.

According to the sites Mr. Bauer gave us and the time I actually put effort into learning about Islam and Muhammad, I would have to say that Muhammad was a meanie. He did not believe in equality, I.E: slaves, women were put down. He had several acts of rage, especially with the massacre of approximately 800 Jewish captives. Which leads to another point, Muhammad killed or tried to kill everyone who was non-Muslim.

Both of these men had a "job" to proclaim their faiths and religion, whether it be by miracles, or force. In my opinion, Jesus was a great man who helped change humanity, and Muhammad was just a man who changed humanity. Jesus was love and not an act, unlike Muhammad. I don't mean to "hate on" Islam, and I hate to be biased. My mom taught me that if you have nothing nice to say, then don't say anything at all.

  14. Wow... the dumbest thing just happened... i was about 2 paragraphs into my answer for this question and all of a sudden my comp crashes.. Great... So I'm just going to make this short and sweet. Although I don't think Muhammad was very ethical in his actions, there must be something about him or his teachings that make Islam so popular. I mean, how else would Islam be able to accumulate so many members, and still grow if it didn't have "something more" something past the actions of Muhammad. Although I don't know the answer, but it would be pretty interesting to find out (if anyone could answer i would appreciate it)

Anyway, back to the question. To be honest, I couldn't find much similarities between the two (Jesus/Muhammad) other than they were both prophets who preached about one God. However, there were so many differences I just stopped counting them. Many were already stated before, such as his disposition towards women and men. His actions almost mimic those of a barbarian; I mean come on, conquering villages, slaughtering innocent men AND raping their wives and daughters? That's insanity... And Jessica, you bring a good point, but this is a step lower than being married off against your will, this is being raped against your will,At least if you were being married off it wasn't a surprise that you were going to have... relations with someone. With rape however, its sudden, unexpected, and traumatizing. Make no mistake, I'm not condoning either actions, but I am saying that one is much worse than the other.

I have a question that I would like to be answered... (and I'm a little too lazy to check out the answer right now.) why is Muhammad considered by Islams the most perfect human, and why do they idolize him so much... His actions clearly show he's not the sort of man that should be worshipped; In my opinion that's like proclaiming Osama Bin Laden is a prophet.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying all Islams idolize Muhammad, and I'm also not saying that Islam is a bad religion. There are some principles within Islam that I think are really good principles to live by.

  15. I believe that Jesus and Muhammad were somewhat similar in certain areas and radically different in others. Muhammad was radically different from Jesus in the sense that he was known to have possessed slaves, raped women, and condoned numerous other sinful actions that wouldn’t be expected to have been approved of by the prophet. Jesus of course did none of these things and was a humble man with a loving outlook on life. If someone wronged Jesus, he would show only forgiveness to them. Muhammad on the other hand, would see payback as a must and would have to get even with them. A slight similarity between the two is that they both believed in only one God. Also, they both wanted peace and love, except Jesus wanted universal peace while Muhammad wanted peace within the Muslim community. The problem with Muhammad is that he would not accept people from outside his religion as equal while Jesus loved and respected whoever he would encounter.

  16. Jesus and Muhammad were somewhat similar to what they are known for, originators of a religion, but they are extremely different.
Jesus was much more kind and compassionate to his followers. He did not have slaves, and he even treated the lowest in society with his kindness. As for Muhammad, he was much more of a pervert and it seems that he made rules just for his own "needs". He was harsh to his followers, and owned them as slaves, even seperating them from families. I don't understand why Muslims believe he was the greatest prophet ever, but we also need to understand that at the time of his rule, things were tough and most children were treated harsh, which is possibly in where his abusive side has come from.

By the way, I'm sorry this is late!

  17. And for Steven P...
You've asked: "why is Muhammad considered by Islams the most perfect human, and why do they idolize him so much... His actions clearly show he's not the sort of man that should be worshipped; In my opinion that's like proclaiming Osama Bin Laden is a prophet."

I wonder the same thing. I'm not Muslim, but if I was, I wouldn't consider him the greatest prophet out of all of them. But it can possibly be because Muhammad was the originator of Islam, and without him, Islam possibly wouldn't exist. He was the one who received the word from Allah in Mecca, and taught his people. It's kind of like parents, no matter how harsh they can be or unbearable, they're still you're originators and that's why you should still love and accept them... if that makes sense.
