Women of Israel (HW due Monday, October 26th)

Read pages 84-91 and respond to these questions: How were women in Jesus' time treated? What types of things would modern women find unacceptable? How were the marriages different from our modern marriages? Do you think women are happier today?

  1. Women weren't treated as equals and were considered to be only property to men. One thing that modern women might find unacceptable is that just because of your gender you're of a lower rank than someone else and another one is that you weren't considered people but instead only property. In today's marriages you get to choose who you want to marry but back then your partner in marriage was picked for you and usually today you marry someone of your age but back then girls were married at the age of 12. I think women are much happier today because they have rights and are considered equals.

  2. Women during Jesus' time were mostly considered property by men. They had no freedom, because they had to serve men and if they saw a man on the street they would have to keep their distance or else it was considered disrespectful. Younger women, felt like property the most, because when they were only 12 years old their father would try to sell them into marriage with older men. Also, the women had to serve the men for dinner and eat the leftovers. Modern women today would object to all of the "rights" women had during the time of Jesus, because they had no freedom to pursue what they wanted to be instead they had to stay home to cook and clean. Another thing most women would object is eating the leftovers from the men. Most women today are independent and strong people trying to make a difference in the world, however during Jesus' life time, the ability to do this was very limited. Today's marriages are different, because they usually aren't an agreement for money, but instead for love. Also, women have the choice to choose who they want to spend their whole life with instead of having arranged marriages. Even though in some countries such as India, they have arranged marriages, mostly in the world women have the right to choose. I do think today women are happier then they were years before, because they are the verge of being treated equally, even though we still have to fight for it.

  3. In Jesus' day women weren't treated like men. Men were the "people" back then and the women were property of the men. The women were basically treated like slaves to the men. Women of today would find thier whole concept of womens rights back then. Women today are chase their dreams and dont just stay home and cook and clean, and did as the men told them to do. the marriages today are different because they weren't arranged for money, and the women choose who they marry, because it isn't always out of love. I think women today overall are happy with the freedom with their lives

  4. Women during Jesus' time were treated like property of the men. They weren't treated as equals and just treated as if they had no feelings. Modern women today would object because the women had no freedom back in Jesus' time. They were treated unfair and guys could do whatever. The women in todays world must are strong and independent and rarely rely on a man for all things. Marriages are different today because now women have more rights in the marriage and are not just treated as property. Most women have a right to chose who they marry unlike the women in Jesus' time. I think women are much happier now and feel better about themselves because they are treated like they are important and needed in todays society.

  5. Women "belong" to men back during the time of Jesus. They were considered to have no emotions or thoughts. They were basically servants. things are different now but still women odn't get the respect they deserve. Now women can choose who the lucky guy is where as back in Jesus' time the women had no say in the matter what so ever. Now women are no longer property but still don't get all the same benifits as men do. We still haven't had a woman President, why because it is sexual segragation. Even though women are free they still aren't treated as well as men.

  6. The women were treated as though they were not equal to the men. the men had claimed property of there wives and children. Some things that modern women might find unacceptable is: woman could not eat with the men, and they had to eat while standing, they had arranged marriages, and they married at such a young age. Like I just said, the marriages were arranged by the parents (mostly by the father.) Although I do believe that some countries still do arranged marriages. I think women today are much happier, well they should be. They have the same rights as everyone else, and are (almost) treated as equally as men. I said almost because some men feel the need to be inferior over women.

  7. The women back in Jesus' time weren't treated as equally as men. They didn't have much rights, and were looked upon as "property" more than a human being. Most modern day women today would find most of the rights that we had in the past unacceptable, because they hardly had any rights. They didn't have much freedom, and was disrespected wherever they went, and had to listen to whatever the men said. Marriages are different today, since most people marry for love, and nobody has to choose. It's more of a decision between the two, instead of only one. I do believe that women are happier today, since we have 10xs more rights than they had in the past, and everybody is treated about equally, even though there are certain problems that are still an issue today.

  8. During Jesus’ time, women were not treated as equally as men but were owned by them, according to what Caitlin said. The husband’s wife and children were considered as “his property” and were severely punished if one of them disobeyed him. For example, if a betrothed woman was found guilty of adultery, she was to be stoned to death because she was already considered the property of her husband. Their marriages were different from our modern marriages because their marriages would only last for a week or after. A husband’s own wife even called him “lord” or “master” and the Law allowed him to sell his children to slavery if they ever commit a crime. The men were extremely dominant over the women and were expected to be during Jesus’ time. I think that women today are happier than back then because of the privileges and rights that they have today, but I also agree with Justin that women today are still not treated as equally as men.

  9. Women were treated as a property of their husbands. The men were head of the family and women could not go against any of their actions. Modern women would not accept calling their husbands lord or master. They would not satisfy every trivia command that a husband would ask for. The marriages in Jesus' time were different by marrying at an early age. Men were married no later than the age of twenty and women were married when they are able to bear children. Women are happier today because they have more freedom and rights than before and are important in society.

  10. In Jesus' time women were treated very unfairly. Women at this time were considered male property. They had barely any rights and had to act a certain way or do certain things or else they would be punished. Women did not choose who they were to marry and all arrangements were made by the father. Today women are treated nearly as equal as men and are obviously much happier. They have equal rights, can willingly choose their partner, and are not treated as property. However, I agree with Justin on how women are not fully on equal terms with men. I feel, however, that as time progresses and as humans morally develop, this will change.

  11. In Jesus' time, women weren't given equal treatment. Instead, they were considered a man's property. Women today have or have work toward having equal rights as men in almost everything. Marriages back then was basically an arranged marriage for them since they couldn't take part in choosing their future spouse and it was left to the decision of their father. In modern marriages, women can chose who they want to be with allowing them to be free and not property. Woman should be happy due to the progress they made from owned individuals to a free, equal person.

  12. In Jesus' time, women were treated as if they were property. Men would think of a woman almost as people would think of their dog nowadays. Modern women would find unacceptable the lack of respect and rights that were given to women of Jesus' era. Modern women would be averse to the fact that women were given no say in anything at this time. The way that their marriages were different, is that there was never really a bond or any sort of connection created between the couple. Marriages for the most part were fixed and thought of only as what was needed to keep the race going. I think that women are happier today because they are given the ability to have their own opinion, much more equal rights(although men and women still aren't completely equal), and the opportunity to make something of themselves.

  13. Women in Jesus' time were barely considered humans, its as if they were a step down from the men. Men "owned" women as their property, they were thought of as only good for cooking, cleaning, and having kids. Girls as young as twelve would be sold by their fathers to a man who could be in their twenties. Women in our time would not stand for this, we now know what is wrong a right, and treating women as property is wrong, both men and women are equal.

  14. Women in Jesus' time were viewed as inferior to men. They were used as if they were property. Women in this present time would think most of the things done to women were unacceptable, such as being married off to a stranger when you're a teenager, being used as, basically, a slave and being disrespected most of the time. Marriages in Jesus' time were mostly arranged and young teenagers would be married off to adult men. Even though arranged marriages do exist in today's world, it's definitely not as common as before. Women, for the most part, are happier in today's world. We have more freedom and rights, it's much easier to be a woman. Even though women still aren't exactly equal to men it's still a major improvement compared to Jesus' time.

  15. Women were not treated as equals in Jesus' time. They were treated as property. They were traded and used and they were not respected. Modern women would not find this treatment acceptable. They would not want to be treated like things. Modern women would not like to have their husbands chosen by them. Marriages are different these days because women chose their own partners. Marriages and now about love and not business. Women are diffidently happier today because they are treated with much more respect then they once were and now they are thought of as equals instead of an item.

  16. Things were really different back then in Jesus's time for women. They were simply tools and servants for them. The women of our time would just find every detail of this unbeleivable, having no rights or a say in anything. Today they are stronger and more independent and wouldn't stand for thing that had occured back then. Today the girls get the right to decide wether to say yes or no if some one wants to marry them, unlike back then when they were forced to say yes. As for the last question, I can't really answer that. I have no idea what the girls back then could have been thinking. If I had been raised to do something my entire life, I guess I would get a slight satisfaction from the act of performing it right. We really have no idea if the Israelite women back then took pleasure in it or not.

  17. Women in Jesus' time are not truly women at all. Their wishes were not repected and no one cared what they wanted. The idea the men had were that the women were their property. Modern women would think marrying your child off to a complate stranger is wrong and shouldn't happen. The fathers went and found guys without telling their daughters whom the men were and just told them "hey this your husband." I think women now are alot happier with finding their own husbands and living a respected happy life.

  18. Back in in Jesus' time, women weren't equal to men. Women were considered just to be property. Women were the men's. Women were also not allowed to choose who they married. Today, women have almost complete equality with men. Many of our women today are not "house mom's" anymore. They have jobs and are sometimes even more powerful than men. I would say that women are much happier with their role in society today rather than back in Jesus' time.
