The Greek Occupation of Israel

  1. The Jews rebelled against the Greek rule after many years of peace and cooperation, because the Syrian Greeks in the north were defeated in a naval battle. So, to pay the price they ordered heavy taxation on the people. A group from Israel called the Maccabeus, also meant hammer; defeated the Greeks after they had destroyed the temple Solomon created and replaced it with an alter for the Greek god Zeus. The Jews later rebuilt the temple and removed the alter for Zeus. Jews today still celebrate this victory and it is called Feast of Dedication or Hanukkah. Soon, the Jews tried to overthrow the Greeks, because of unfair rulings and the Jews were successful, not because they were great in military performance, but because God was on their side. After the Greeks built the alter for Zeus, it started a era of rage and destruction, because they were favoring other gods before God and the Jews didn't like this idea and started to protect their religion.

  2. The Jews rebelled because the Syrian Greeks expressed their grudge from losing to Romans on to them. As a result the Jews had heavy taxation to support the Greeks to pay off Rome. The Greeks also built an altar of the Greek god Zeus in the holy of holies in their beloved Temple. The Jewish leaders nicknamed Maccabeus led the rebellion because of their ferocious fighting. The group that failed to lead was the Jewish family who received the gift of the position of high priest. Instead, they violated the traditions of their own people. The Jews were succesful because they had the strength to overcome any enemies with the faith of one God.

  3. Darn it Bianca you beat me to it! Any who the Jews had rebelled against the Greeks because the northern Greeks were defeated in the naval battle. Hanukkah is the celebration of this great defeat. The Jews took back the rule from the greeks beacsue of un fair rules and desicions. God helped them win that battle, but this caused more death and moral holocausts.

  4. The jews rebelled against the Greeks because the greeks were defeated. So because of the battle the Jews were being taxed to pay off Rome and to support other Greeks. The leaders of the Jews were the Maccabeus and they were very strong and brave fighters. The group that failed was the high priests. I think the Jews were sucessful because the greeks underestimated them and also because the Jews had God on their side.

  5. I agree with Bianca, her answer was good.
The Jews rebelled because the Greeks in the North were attacked and defeated in battle. Because of this defeat, they took it out on the Jews and ordered big taxation on them. Then the Maccabees, a small group also in Israel defeated the Greeks and took over the Jews. They destroyed the temple Solomon built and recreated it as an altar for the Greek god Zeus. The Jews defeated the greeks with God on their side. They tore down the altar for zeus and rebuilt the temple. I think what lead them to overthrow the Greeks is their love for God and wanting to protect their religion and not to start believing in false gods.

  6. The Jews rebelled against the Greek rule because of the heavy taxation as a result of the Greek defeat in a naval battle against the Romans. The peace and goodwill between the Jews and the Greeks seized to exist due to this. The Jewish leader, Maccabeus, lead the rebelling Jews to victory. Although the odds were highly against them, they were victorious due to their strong faith in God. Unfortunately, the high priests failed to lead the Jews in their time of independence.

  7. I completely agree with Bianca. The Jews rebelled against the Greeks because of there heavy taxation, which was caused by there defeat in a naval battle against the Romans. Maccabeus had lead the Jews to victory. The high priests were the ones who failed. The Jews were successful because they had great faith in God, and probably because the Greeks underestimated them, making them vulnerable.

  8. The Greeks lost a naval battle against the Romans and because of that loss they heavily taxed the Jews. The Greeks also built an altar for Zeus in the Jews temple which greatly angered them. The Maccabeus led the Jews to victory, but the high priests were not able lead the Jews when they were most needed. I'm not exactly sure why the Jews were successful but it probably had to do with their strong faith.

  9. The Jews rebelled against the Greeks after a long period of peace because the Greeks lost against the Romans thus leading to heavy taxation to the Jews. A group lead by , Maccabeus, defeated the Greeks after they had created an alter for Zeus. The Jews also tried to rebel another time, lead by the high priest, but was unsuccessful. The Jews were successful because God was on their side and they placed their trust with him.

  10. One reason the Jews rebelled, because of heavy taxation from the Greek naval lost. Also, the Greeks began to destory the temple of God and replace it with an alter to honor Zeus. The Maccabeus were the group that defeated the Greeks after the Jews rebelled about the alter created. Again, they disagreed with the high preist and rebelled against them, however the high preist lost. I think that the Jews won, because they had a reason to fight, they weren't doing it out of personal intent, but rather for religious intent and God helped them win to vicotory.

  11. Jews rebelled because of the oppression of the Greeks and because the Greeks destroyed the Temple and built shrine for Zeus. The Maccabees was the group that led the rebellion named Maccabean revolt after him.I think the Jews were successful because of their faith was immense and was overall the backbone of their lives.

  12. The reason that the Jews rebelled is because the Greeks had just been defeated previously. The group being led by Maccabeus was able to defeat the Greeks. Those that can be considered to have failed were the high priests.I believe that they were successful because they placed their hope in God's hand and allowed him to help them in their conquest for victory.

  13. Jews rebelled against Greek rule because the Northern Greeks were defeated in the naval battle. The group that led the rebellion were the Maccabeus; the group that failed to lead was the high priests. The Jews were probably so succesful because they believed in God and had their trust in him.

  14. I finally have access to a computer in RI! Sorry I'm late. After the Romans win a naval battle against the Syrian Greeks, the Romans demand a huge amount of money and in order to pay the Greeks must tax the Jews. The Jewish leader, Maccabeus, was successful in leading the rebellion. The high priests were the people that failed. I think the Jews won because they wanted to win more. They actually had something worth fighting for, their freedom, but the Greeks were just fighting to keep them as slaves.

  15. Although it has been mentioned many times before, after the defeat of the Syrian army the Romans had demanded money from the conquered territory. The Jews were taxed heavily in order to pay off the war effort, this unfair taxation had frustrated the Jews and all good feelings towards the Greeks vanished. There were two distinct groups within Palestine that took one of two sides. The wealthy who decided not to rebel because they were fearful of being stripped of their status, and the "Hasidim" who rebelled against the Greek rulers. The highest point of tension was when the Greek leaders of Syria destroyed the Jewish temple, and built an altar to their highest god Zeus. This had thrown every Jew in Judea over the edge, and led by a leader called "Maccabeus," they won an unexpected victory over the Greeks. This revolt was later named the "Maccabean War" and is told in two books of the Old Testament.

  16. Many Greek culture had influenced the Jewish way of life. Yet after the Syrian Greeks had been defeated by the Romans in a naval battle it went downhill. The Romans had demanded a large amount of money from the Greeks as the price of defeat. The Greeks, however, did not have the amount of money so instead they began to tax the Jews. There had been two groups within Palestine, the wealthy Jewish leaders, which consisted of wealthy landowners and priests. They tried to cooperate with the Greeks only because they wished to not start any problems. The other class was the Hasidim, who resented the Greeks the most. I believe the Jews were so successful because when their temple and city was destroyed by the Greeks, their anger caused them to fight for what they thought was right and therefore, they won the rebellion.

  17. The Jews had rebelled because the Greeks had lost to the Romans and because they were so angry about this lost they had ordered heavy taxation on the Jews and then the Greeks had destroyed the temple Solomon had made and replaced it with a temple to their god Zeus. Maccabeus was successful in leading the rebellion and the high priests were the ones who failed. The Jews were successful because they had kept their faith and believed that God would protect them no matter how hard things got.
